The Guess Who - Rockin (1972) [Vinyl Rip]

Year: 1972 (LP 1972)
Label: RCA Victor Records (UK), SF 8269 (LSP 4602)
Style: Rock
Country: Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada (1962–present)
Time: 38:24
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 228 Mb

Early years:
In the late 1950s, lead singer Allan formed the Silvertones with fellow Winnipeg teenagers Kale, a bassist; Bachman, a guitarist; and pianist Bob Ashley. With the addition of drummer Peterson, they became Chad Allan & the Reflections and by 1965 were Chad Allan & the Expressions. Heavily influenced by the British Invasion, the group developed a loyal following in Winnipeg, but its recordings suffered from the refusal by most radio stations in Canada to play Canadian groups. In 1965 their cover of Johnny Kidd and the Pirates’ "Shakin’ All Over" was released to radio stations under the moniker "Guess Who?" in the hope that disc jockeys would be more inclined to play a song by a mysterious new British band. Whether this marketing ploy had anything to do with the song’s success is debatable, but it was a chart-topping hit in Canada and reached No. 22 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. Later that year keyboardist Cummings joined the group and took over as vocalist and frontman when Allan left in 1966. After a disappointing tour of the United Kingdom in 1967, the group served for two years as the house band on the CBC TV music-variety program Let’s Go, hosted by Allan. From 1966 to 1968, when the question mark was dropped from its name, the Guess Who landed a number of singles in the Canadian Top 40 but its albums sold poorly.
International success:
After acquiring the band’s contract from Quality Records for $1,000, producer Jack Richardson placed a second mortgage on his house to finance the album Wheatfield Soul (1969), which yielded the million-selling "These Eyes," a Top 10 hit in both Canada and the U.S. Canned Wheat (1969) followed and included double-sided hit singles "Laughing" and "Undun." It was the next album, American Woman (1970), however, that made the Guess Who stars. Its title track, the first recording by a Canadian rock group to hit No. 1 in the United States on the Billboard Hot 100, had serendipitous origins, beginning as a riff improvised by Bachman while tuning his guitar after breaking a string during a concert and was spontaneously augmented by the rest of the group, including Cummings, who added the memorable lyrics "American woman stay away from me." "No Sugar Tonight," the B-side for "American Woman," also was a hit in both Canada and the U.S. "No Time," which was originally included on Canned Wheat, was re-recorded for American Woman and became its third hit single. American Woman reached No. 9 on the Billboard Pop Albums chart, making it the only Guess Who album to reach the Top 10.
Post-Bachman years:
Wearied of the conflict between his religious beliefs and the band’s rock-and-roll lifestyle, Bachman, who had converted to Mormonism in 1966, left the Guess Who in 1970. He later reteamed with Allan to form Brave Belt, which evolved into Bachman-Turner Overdrive. Two guitarists, Winter—who became Cummings’s primary songwriting partner—and Leskiw, replaced Bachman. The first album with this new lineup, Share the Land (1970), featured several hits, including Winter’s "Hand Me Down World" and "Bus Rider," along with Cummings’s title track and the Cummings-Winter collaboration "Hang On to Your Life." So Long, Bannatyne (1971) followed a year later and included the popular singles "Rain Dance" and "Sour Suite." A concert album, Live at the Paramount (1972), yielded the Canadian hit "Runnin’ Back to Saskatoon" and led renowned rock critic Lester Bangs to declare "The Guess Who is God."

Dire Straits - On Every Street (1991) [Vinyl Rip]

Year: 9 September 1991, Recorded November 1990 – May 1991, (LP 1991)
Label: Lad Records (Russia St.-Peterburg), 510160-1
Style: Rock, Roots Rock
Country: Deptford, London, England (1977-1995)
Time: 59:45
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 334 Mb

Five years ago, Dire Straits was threatening to become the biggest band in the world — and/or an extended arena-rock cliche — when Mark Knopfler whipped off his headband, put down his guitar and hopped off the "money for nothing, chicks for free" treadmill. After an extended hiatus, Knopfler has made an album that falls somewhere between a radical reinvention of Dire Straits and the next step on a continuum from the mega-platinum Brothers in Arms, released in 1985. While "Heavy Fuel,” sardonic but fairly witless, will likely emerge as a raised-fist, frat-boy anthem in the "Money for Nothing" mold, most of the rest forsakes heavy-riffing guitar-hero histrionics for more mature brands of mood music.
In the manner of last year’s Notting Hillbillies and Knopfler’s other side projects, On Every Street explores Knopfler’s affinity with Nashville in particular and with an idealized version of the musical South in general, with session steel player Paul Franklin emerging as his major musical foil. The album opens in Memphis with "Calling Elvis,” which offers a playful ride on the "Mystery Train" into a brave new world of sampling and rhythm loops. From there the songcraft of "When It Comes to You,” "The Bug" and "How Long" practically demands the country-cover treatment, while Franklin additionally makes key contributions to the cocktail-jazz cool of "Fade to Black" and the "Spanish Harlem”-tinged "Ticket to Heaven.”
While the more economical material offers the major musical pleasures, some of the longer pieces seem like mere exercises in style: The title song and "You and Your Friend" mainly serve as excuses for the instrumental interplay of their extended fades. At more than seven minutes, "The Planet of New Orleans" was apparently designed as the album’s centerpiece, but it sounds like a leftover from one of Knopfler’s film sound-tracks, its evocation of "mojo root" incongruous, given a musical backdrop that suggests the aural equivalent of designer fashion.
As a whole, On Every Street reconfirms that Knopfler is an impeccable guitarist, a musician of exquisite taste — but some of it shows why impeccability in rock is often a minor virtue and tastefulness a smooth path to tedium.

Blodwyn Pig - Getting To This (1970) [Vinyl Rip, 1st press]

Year: 1970 (LP 1970 1st Press)
Label: Chrysalis Records (UK), ILPS.9122
Style: Rock, Blues Rock
Country: UK
Time: 39:08
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 253 Mb

Abrahams left Jethro Tull, due to a falling-out with Tull vocalist Ian Anderson, after their debut album, This Was, was released, and formed Blodwyn Pig with Jack Lancaster (saxophone and flute), Andy Pyle (bass guitar), and Ron Berg (drums). Ex-Yes and future Flash guitarist Peter Banks became one of several guitarists to succeed Abrahams after he left to form his own band for a time.
With Abrahams and Lancaster in the lead, Blodwyn Pig recorded two albums, Ahead Rings Out in 1969 and Getting To This in 1970. Both reached the Top Ten of the UK Albums Chart and charted in the United States; Ahead Rings Out displayed a jazzier turn on the heavy blues–rock that formed the band's core rooted in the British 1960s rhythm and blues scene from which sprang groups like The Yardbirds, Free and eventually Led Zeppelin. Saxophonist–singer Lancaster (who often played two horns at once, like his idol Rahsaan Roland Kirk) was at least as prominent in the mix as Abrahams; some critics thought this contrast bumped the band toward a freer, more experimental sound on the second album.
The single "Summer Day" from the album Ahead Rings Out failed to chart, but the quartet became something of a favourite on the underground concert circuit. Largely due to Abrahams's disillusionment with the business side of music, Blodwyn Pig eventually became an on-again, off-again concern; Lancaster at one point became a record producer, and Pyle eventually joined Savoy Brown. Over the years since their original formation, Blodwyn Pig reformed several times, usually with Abrahams and Lancaster leading the group, and recorded two more albums in the 1990s.

Alice - Alice (1970) CD

Year: 1970 (CD 2001)
Label: Progressive Line Records (Australia) PL 507
Style: Prog Rock, Psychedelic Rock
Country: France
Time: 61:43
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 328 Mb

Recorded At The Marquee Studio, London, October 20th To 29th 1970, this record led to obvious comparisons with Jethro Tull, Traffic, Pink Floyd and Family…featuring some excellent proto prog, sometimes a bit similar to Comus and there are even some Faust-like melodies here and there… Alice's greatest strength was their talent for songwriting, composing songs with an instant appeal. Their music was lively and rural with some hippie vibes, maybe closest to Traffic's second album. On some tracks Alice used warbling Leslie effects on the vocals. Along with the first Magma album, this was one of the best French albums of 1970.
Alice belonged to the first generation of French rock groups along with Alan Jack Civilization, Systeme Crapoutchik, Ame Son and Martin Circus.

The Moody Blues - The Other Side Of Life (1986) [Vinyl Rip]

Year: 1986 (LP 1987)
Label: Melodia Records (Russia) C60 26203 009
Style: Art Rock, Symphonic Rock, Pop
Country: Birmingham, England (1964–present)
Time: 42:06
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 286 Mb

"The word down here/On the streets tonight/Is the truest music you've heard," declares The Other Side of Life's title track. But if that's true, who would bother with the new Moody Blues record? With over twenty years of lucrative astral travel behind them, this band hits the street only to head straight for the bank.
Fortunately, most of The Other Side of Life doesn't indulge twaddle about "the streets" and instead plays to the Moodys' longstanding musical strengths: luscious symphonic textures; rich, stately melodies; and densely overlaid vocal arrangements. As for lyrics, the Moodys pretty much successfully avoid pomposity on this LP – only on, gulp, "The Spirit" ("A broken dream seems unkind/But I can help for I am time") does the band betray its weakness for cosmic wisdom.
The catchy, upbeat single "Your Wildest Dreams" kicks off the LP and finds the Moodys at their engaging best. An unassuming reflection about a former lover, the song balances lushness and energy and keeps the action settled on the human plane. The disco pound and swirl of "Rock 'n' Roll over You" (the world's dopiest pun: "Like a rock/I'm gonna roll over you") most clearly reveals the touch of producer Tony Visconti, which is rather heavy-handed on this track. But on "Talkin' Talkin'" he soups up the beat effectively and keeps the musical parts moving.
In less accomplished hands, "The Other Side of Life" would be little more than another haunting, film-noirish bid for a Miami Vice soundtrack slot, but the Moodys pull it off with effortless elegance. And on "Running Out of Love," the band hauls off its old R&B; punch, slicked up with Patrick Moraz's greasy synthesizer riffs. The album's final cut, the ballad "It May Be a Fire," features Justin Hayward's soaring guitar solos, an element of the Moodys' sound that deserves greater prominence.
All five Moody Blues are pushing or past forty, so it's hardly surprising that The Other Side of Life breaks little new ground, beyond Visconti's goosing the bottom a bit. Still, the LP's off to a hot start on the charts and may potentially become one of the band's most commercially successful records. With their extraordinary consistency and appeal – it's staggering that people are "discovering" the Moody Blues in 1986 – their fans' children's children's children will be picking up their records. Whatever you may think about "dinosaur" bands, that's a kind of noncosmic immortality that shouldn't be lightly dismissed.

Deep Purple - Made In Japan (1972) [+Bonus CD]

Year: 15-17 August 1972 (CD 1998)
Label: Warner Bros. Records (USA), R2 75623
Style: Hard Rock (Live)
Country: Hertford, Hertfordshire, England
Time: 76:19, 21:45
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 486, 168 Mb

Deep Purple have had a rough time gaining and retaining the status of being Kings of the Heavy Metal Set, and with the release of their last album, Who Do We Think We Are?, many critics rejected the fawnish fivesome for trying to step out of their league with electronic-cum-Yes gizmos and melodic lines or staying within the confines of their initial blockbuster, Deep Purple in Rock. If you’re expecting something new in terms of either approach or material from Made In Japan, you will be severely disappointed, but if you’re a diehard fan of the group and not too interested in any great diversification from their old style, Made In Japan is an assured treat. For Made In Japan is Purple’s definitive metal monster, a spark-filled execution of the typical Purple style.
Unlike Five Live Yardbirds or Humble Pie-Rocking the Fillmore, Deep Purple deems it unnecessary to play any new material on their live albums. The live versions of all the songs are played at a much quicker pace than they were in the studio. So when “Strange Kind of Woman” or “Lazy” comes over the radio, the average listener will be able to jump up and say, “How come they’re playing those Deep Purple records so fast?” only to be astounded when the Osaka audience’s applause appears at the end of the song. This album was originally intended to be released only in the United Kingdom, but when hundreds of thousands of copies of the import started selling in America at ten bucks a shot, Warners decided to get on the case and released it just a few months after Purple’s last LP.
As far as the artistic side of Made In Japan, Deep Purple have always been ace performers, rarely using any gimmicks other than their own volatile stage personalities. While Purple refuses to take themselves too seriously, all of the solos on Made In Japan are technically superior to most instrumental melodramatics one hears from supposedly more serious bands. Deep Purple is a tried-and-true Seventies group that has proven itself time and time again, a favorite of many a serious musician (for instance, the Strawbs’ Dave Cousins). While we still have to wait for their next release to know if they are going to continue at even keel, the fact is Made In Japan is here, it’s everything it should be and more, and Deep Purple can still cut the mustard in concert — so be it.

Baker Gurvitz Army - Baker Gurvitz Army (1975) [Vinyl Rip]

Year: 1975 (LP 1975)
Label: Vertigo Records (UK), 9103 201
Style: Rock, Hard Rock
Country: England (1974–1976)
Time: 42:19
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 255 Mb

BAKER GURVITZ ARMY was a heavy progressive rock band formed in 1974 in England. The band was the combination of members of THE GUN and THREE MAN ARMY, with ex-CREAM drummer Ginger BAKER, guitarist and vocalist Adrian GURVITZ, and bassist Paul GURVITZ formed the band's lineup. The band released their first self-titled album in 1974, which enjoyed moderate success in the UK. The band returned in 1975 with "Elysian Encounter," as well as a live album "Live in Derby '75." In 1976, the band released their third album, "Hearts on Fire." However, the death of the band's manager caused the band to break up. The three members, of whom were already ingrained in the music business' rolodex, had no trouble joining, collaborating with, and forming new bands and projects, such as ATOMIC ROOSTER, HAWKWIND, and others.
The band's music is heavily based in the famous hard rock style of the period, with artful and progressive elements added. Akin to heavy prog giants such as ATOMIC ROOSTER, BAKER GURVITZ ARMY is a prime example of heavy prog with a more accessible edge.
