Lone Rhino is the debut solo album by American musician Adrian Belew, released on April 26, 1982. It features the musicians and much of the repertoire of Belew's pre-King Crimson band GaGa.
The album was recorded following years of Belew playing as lead guitarist for Frank Zappa, David Bowie, Talking Heads and Tom Tom Club, and seven months after his 1981 debut as the lead singer, lyricist, and second guitarist of King Crimson with Discipline. A video was produced for the track "Big Electric Cat", filmed in 1982 in New York City that opens with a shot of the World Trade Center. Belew's daughter Audie (four years old at the time) duets with her father on the last track, "The Final Rhino" (which was produced when Belew secretly recorded a piano piece improvised by Audie and then added a guitar line). She also coined the word "momur" which meant anything that frightened her (monster). The song "Animal Grace" was originally called "Buy That Face" and was written about David Bowie. Members of the Springfield, Illinois High School band were enlisted to play the 7/8 coda on "Adidas in Heat".

Jean Michel Jarre - Zoolook (1984)

Year: November 12, 1984 (CD January 2, 2015)
Label: Sony Music (Germany), 88875046352
Style: Ambient, New Age, Electronic
Country: Lyon, France (24 August 1948)
Time: 37:56
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 265 Mb

Charts: AUS #69, AUT #28, GER #24, NL #27, SWE #21, SWI #30, UK #47, NZ #35. UK: Silver.
Much of the music is built up from samples of singing and speech in 25 different languages recorded and edited in the Fairlight CMI digital sampling synthesizer. The album spawned two singles: the title track and "Zoolookologie".
"I've always been involved in ethnic music, though I thought the way a lot of people have been using ethnic music was a little superficial. Sometimes it works, like the Brian Eno stuff, it worked the first time, but for me what was more interesting was not making a particular statement about recording in Africa or in China, but taking some sounds and having exactly the same attitude as when you were in front of a Moog 55 or a modular system, replacing the oscillators with a bank of actors or people, treating them through the Fairlight or the EMS synth, and establishing an orchestration using only voices."
Some of the vocals were recorded during Jean-Michel's travels, while others are instead the result of his work with Xavier Bellanger, a French ethnologist who during his travels recorded "a large collection of tapes". For this album, Jarre used the synthesizers Moog 55, ARP 2600, some by EMS, the LinnDrum machine, the Yamaha DX7, the Matrisequencer 250 designed by French sound engineer Michel Geiss for Equinoxe (1978), and the E-mu Emulator. The different languages as listed in the album's liner notes are: Aboriginal, Afghan, Arabic, Balinese, Bengali, Chinese, Dutch, English, Eskimo, French, German, Hungarian, Indian, Japanese, Malagasy, Malayan, Pygmy, Polish, Quechua, Russian, Sioux, Spanish, Swedish, Tibetan, and Turkish.

King Crimson - In The Wake Of Poseidon [Japan Ed. 24 Karat Gold] (1970)

Year: May 15, 1970 (CD Mar 1, 2000)
Label: Discipline Global Mobile (Japan), PCCY-01422
Style: Progressive Rock, Art Rock
Country: London, England
Time: 41:03
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 236 Mb

Charts: UK #4, AUS #17, CAN #28, US #31.
The album opens with an a cappella piece called "Peace – A Beginning". An extended version of this piece, "Peace – A Theme", adds a middle eight and is performed on an unaccompanied acoustic guitar. This track appears at the beginning of side two, perhaps conceived as the mid-point of the album, and a third version, "Peace – An End" appears at the conclusion of the album. "Peace – An End" is to some extent a combination of the other two versions, containing both vocals and acoustic guitar as well as the middle eight, but the lyrics are entirely different from those of "Peace – A Beginning".
The strongly jazz fusion-influenced "Pictures of a City" was originally performed live, often extended to over ten minutes and was called "A Man, a City". An example of such a performance appears on the live compilation album Epitaph.
The ballad "Cadence and Cascade" is about two groupies.
The longest track on the album is a chaotic instrumental piece called "The Devil’s Triangle". This was adapted from the 1969 band's live arrangement of Gustav Holst's "Mars: Bringer of War" (from his The Planets suite), later released on Epitaph (where it is titled merely "Mars"). "The Devil's Triangle" employs a different staccato riff than the one from "Mars". In 1971, a brief excerpt from "The Devil’s Triangle" was featured in "The Mind of Evil", the second serial of the eighth season of the BBC television series Doctor Who. The track includes part of the chorus from "The Court of the Crimson King", a track from the band's first album, using a studio technique known as xenochrony. Despite this, Ian McDonald, who composed "The Court of the Crimson King", is not given co-writing credit on this segment of "The Devil's Triangle", only on the opening section, "Merday Morn".

After Dreamboat Annie became a million seller, Mushroom took out a full-page ad in the December 30, 1976, issue of Rolling Stone magazine touting the band's success, using the headline "Million to One Shot Sells a Million". The ad looked like the front page of the tabloid newspaper National Enquirer and included a photo from the Dreamboat Annie cover shoot. The caption read: "Heart's Wilson Sisters Confess: 'It Was Only Our First Time!'"
After this ad surfaced, a Detroit radio promoter asked Ann Wilson about her lover—referring to Nancy, thus implying that the sisters were incestuous lesbian lovers. Ann was outraged and retreated to her hotel room to write a song. When she relayed the incident to Nancy, she, too, was infuriated. Nancy joined Ann and contributed a melody and bridge. The song became "Barracuda", which entered Billboard Hot 100 on May 28, and peaked at number 11. and remains one of the band's signature songs.

Marianne Faithfull - Blazing Away [Live] (1990)

Year: Recorded: '88-'89. 1990 (CD Apr 17, 1990)
Label: Island Records (US), 842 794-2
Style: Rock, Ballad
Country: London, England (29 December 1946)
Time: 72:38
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 405 Mb

Charts: AUS #66, AUT #28, NL #75, NZ #19, SWE #44, US #160.
Fully established as a dramatic, innovative singer with astonishing appeal and energy thanks to her string of excellent '80s releases, Faithfull concluded her renaissance decade with Blazing Away, an excellent live album recorded in New York's St. Anne's Cathedral. The crackerjack backing band deserves note in and of itself, including members ranging from the Band's Garth Hudson to Dr. John, plus regular collaborators Marc Ribot, Fernando Saunders, and her key partner Barry Reynolds. Faithfull and the players fit hand in glove track for track, with the emphasis on subtler arrangements and performances suiting the hushed, striking atmosphere of the performance. When the band shows its muscle, as with the snarling strut of "Guilt," there's no question of this being anything like easy listening. In general, though, the sense of cabaret meets modern nightclub dominates, with Faithfull's singing capturing the cracking tug of her vocals just so. The selection of songs ranges from the intriguingly obscure to the familiar enough -- "As Tears Go By" and "Broken English" take unsurprising bows, as does a lengthy brood on "Sister Morphine," "She Moved Through the Fair," and a commanding rip through the harrowing "Why'd Ya Do It?" There are two new numbers as well. The title track is the one song recorded in studio, with Reynolds and Saunders, plus a number of other musicians; it's got a nice steel guitar twang to it, and Faithfull tries for the high lonesome sound in her own wonderful way. Other flat-out highlights include a grand take on "Times Square" and a slow crawl through "Working Class Hero" that seethes with fire, both from the musicians and Faithfull.

The Guess Who - The Best Of [3 bonus tracks] (1971)

Label: BMG Music (US), 82876 75924 2
Style: Rock, Classic Rock
Country: Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada
Time: 49:19
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 316 Mb

Canada: Platinum; US: Gold.
The first half of the album contains tracks from 1968-1970, while the second half of the album contains tracks from the 1970 album "Share the Land". Some of the songs on this album are single edits. For example, the single version of "American Woman" is missing the acoustic introduction. The single version of "Undun", is used as well without the piano intro.
Randy Bachman appears as lead guitar for the first half of the album, while Kurt Winter and Greg Leskiw appear on guitar on the second half of the album.
In addition to the usual 2-channel stereo version, the album was also released by RCA in a 4-channel quadraphonic version on 8-track tape and reel-to-reel.
The first CD issue in 1988 by RCA replaced the single version of "American Woman" with the album version. A reissue by Legacy Recordings in 2006 had the single version restored and added three bonus tracks.

David Bowie - Bowie At The Beeb [2CD. 1968-1972] (2000)

Year: Recorded: 13 May 1968 – 23 May 1972 (CD 26 September 2000)
Label: EMI Records (Europe), 7243 528629 2 4
Style: Glam Rock, Pop Rock
Country: London, England (8 January 1947 - 10 January 2016)
Time: 73:16, 77:57
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 289, 290 Mb

Bowie at the Beeb is a compilation album by the English singer-songwriter David Bowie, first released in 2000. Originally, it came in a three-CD set, the third, bonus CD being a live recording made on 27 June 2000 at the Portland BBC Radio Theatre, part of his Mini Tour. Later editions contain only the first two CDs.
Releases:
The first pressing mistakenly included the second (disc 2, track 13) version of the song "Ziggy Stardust" twice on disc two, missing the first (disc 2, track 5) version. EMI declined to issue corrected replacement discs to customers, instead mailing out one-song CDs of the first version.
This compilation also features a previously unreleased song, "Looking for a Friend" (disc 1, track 15), which John Peel said would be released as a single by Arnold Corns. The single was later cancelled.
(en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bowie_at_the_Beeb)

I've become more leery of post-mortem releases of legendary acts, but this is an amazing collection. It's David Bowie at his best early in his career. My favorite recordings are live studio recordings because there's not the unnatural production of a well rehearsed multi-track recording or the distortion of the venue acoustics and the interaction with the audience. Because Bowie and friends are such pros this collection gives you really cool alternate versions of Bowie classics as well as some cool covers with all the spontaneity of a live performance. Really, I've envied how British music seems to have this vast library of live studio recordings which are every bit as great as the fully produced and engineered studio recordings.
This collection offers a nice cross section of David Bowie's early recordings as well as some interesting insight from his discussions with the host. This is a great collection worth having for the casual fan such as myself or the super fan.

Grace Slick And The Great Society - Collector's Item From The San Francisco Scene [2LP on 1CD] (1971)

Year: 1965-1971 (CD ????)
Label: Columbia Records (US), CGK 30459
Style: Psychedelic Rock, Rock
Country: Highland Park, Illinois, U.S. (October 30, 1939)
Time: 67:07
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 375 Mb

This recording is a historical document of a band and time. It was two shows in 1966 at the Matrix in San Francisco recorded live. The music returns us to a simpler time when music was easy to understand and marvel at and the amps did not destroy our eardrums. It sounds alive and new as it was then - really good remastering of original audio tapes with and informative booklet.
(amazon.com) Review by Joseph G.
This is the first time I have seen this classic on cd. It is, ,admittedly, more expensive than my vinyl copy was at 12s6d but is definitely worth it.
It contains many great tracks in their earliest versions, ,notably "White Rabbit" and "Somebody to Love" , but also "Sally Go Round the Roses" which is a favourite of mine, plus "Grimly Forming" ,"Arbitration" and a few others with an extra seven bonus tracks tacked on the end.
This was the first recording Grace made with her husband Darby Slick on lead guitar, his brother Jerry on drums, David Minor on rhythm guitar and Peter Vandergelder performing as the Great Society. (The " Grace Slick and the ..." tag was only added after the Great Society disbanded in early 1967 and she went on to find fame with Jefferson Airplane.)
The first ten tracks on this were originally released on vinyl titled "Conspicuous Only In Its Absence" from live recordings made at various San Francisco clubs between 1965 and I967 and have the authentic dreamy, spaced out feeling of that era. Long, dramatic raga-like guitar solos building back into razor sharp bursts of vocals characterise these tracks, matching the rainbow coloured light shows and psychedelic nature of these events. These tracks are very different from the tighter, more disciplined Jefferson Airplane ones but have a place in my heart.

Last Flight is an authorized recording released in the United Kingdom, taken from the last live performance of the San Francisco rock group Jefferson Airplane prior to the band's dissolution in 1972. The concert was held at the Winterland Arena in San Francisco, and selected tracks were released on the 1973 album Thirty Seconds Over Winterland. Last Flight consists of the entire concert with the exception of the encore, Marty Balin's "You Wear Your Dresses Too Short", previously released on the Jefferson Airplane Loves You box-set. Balin sings lead vocals on "Volunteers" much to the surprise of the audience since he left the band in late 1970.

Genesis - Foxtrot [Japan Ed.] (1972)

Year: 15 September 1972 (CD Nov 29, 1995)
Label: Virgin Records (Japan), VJCP-3209
Style: Pop, Rock
Country: Godalming, Surrey, England
Time: 51:11
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 292 Mb

Following the identity-sealing statement that was Nursery Cryme, Genesis were now intent on capitalising on their momentum. They continued to play every college gig going while writing song suites about godlike entities overseeing our destiny and dressing like a fox on stage. An average life for a mid-level band in the UK in 1972, then.
They’d fully incorporated the blast of a Mellotron into their sound and Phil Collins jazz leanings were pushing them in a slightly more interesting direction, away from the ponderous prog nonentity that awaited contemporaries like Gentle Giant. What’s more their live sound had become bolstered by the addition of Mike Rutherford’s bass pedals, allowing him to add yet more ringing twelve string into the mix while blasting the front three rows with his feet. Opener “Watcher Of the Skies”, with its tricky time signatures, displays this power to the max.
What follows is a consolidation of the promise shown on Nursery Cryme. The first big difference is the production, which suddenly brings all that chiming acoustic filigree up close and personal. The songs flow easily and the cod-historical tendency is toned down in favour of science fiction (“Watcher…”), an ill-judged ‘contemporary issues’ song (“Get ‘Em Out By Friday”) and biblical allegory (“Supper’s Ready”). You do still get the history-as-moral song with “Timetable” and one more which, for no good reason at all apart from the awful pun contained in the title, is about King Canute: “Can-Utility And The Coastliners”.
But the really big stuff on Foxtrot resides in their first bona fide masterpiece: The side-long epic, “Supper’s Ready”. These days Peter Gabriel himself probably couldn’t tell you exactly what the whole thing’s about, but it involves more puns, the Book of Revelations, atomic war and flowers. Someone probably has a webpage explaining it all…But never mind, for it’s an exhilarating, if slightly lumpy ride through some of the band’s best writing and playing. The best sections include the multi-voiced romp through insanity of “Willow Farm” and the clever-cloggery of “Apocalypse in 9/8 (co-starring the delicious talents of Gabble Ratchet)”. Guess which time signature that was in…
It allowed Gabriel to do even more dressing up, making their shows the hottest tickets in town. Unfortunately the album still stalled on the brink of the big league which contained proggers like Yes and Crimson. Genesis just needed one little extra push. And their next album would supply that. But with Foxtrot everyone had begun to take notice.

John Symon Asher Bruce (14 May 1943 – 25 October 2014) was a Scottish musician. He gained popularity as the primary lead vocalist and ?bassist ?of rock band Cream. After the group disbanded in 1968, he pursued a solo career and also played with several bands.
In the early 1960s, Bruce joined the Graham Bond Organisation (GBO), where he met future Cream bandmate Ginger Baker. After leaving the band, he briefly joined John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers, where he met Eric Clapton. In 1966, after a short time with Manfred Mann, he formed Cream with lead guitarist Clapton and drummer Baker. He co-wrote many of their songs (including "Sunshine of Your Love", "White Room" and "I Feel Free") with poet/lyricist Pete Brown. After the group disbanded in the late 1960s, he began recording solo albums. Bruce put together a band of his own to perform material live and subsequently formed the blues rock band West, Bruce and Laing in 1972, with ex-Mountain guitarist Leslie West and drummer Corky Laing. His solo career spanned several decades. From the 1970s to the 1990s he played with several bands as a touring member. He reunited with Cream in 2005 for concerts at the Royal Albert Hall and at Madison Square Garden in New York.
Bruce is considered one of the most important and influential ?bassists ?of all time. ?Rolling Stone magazine readers ranked him number eight on their list of "10 ?Greatest ?Bassists ?of All Time". He was inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993, and was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006, both as a member of Cream.

David Bowie - Strange Fascination [2CD Live. Bootleg] (1974)

Year: September 5, 1974 (CD 1990. Unofficial Release)

Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 296, 274 Mb

Recorded Live at The Universal Amphiteater in Los Angeles on the 5th of September 1974.
A Japanese double CD made from the original tape. It is not fair to call it a re-issue of the European CD with the same title, because this one contains the 10 minute intro and the outro. The intro consists of lots of street sounds and the outro is the voice of the promoter announcing that Bowie has left the theatre after the final song. The sound quality is absolutely excellent, which means even better than the European issue, but if you can't compare you won't notice! Anyway, it's a true must!

Rainbow - Rainbow Rising [Deluxe Edition 2CD] (1976)

Year: 17 May 1976 (CD 2011)
Label: Polydor Records / Universal Music (Europe), 5332266
Style: Hard Rock
Country: London and Los Angeles
Time: 77:20, 43:12
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 512, 293 Mb

Charts: UK #11, AUS #33, CAN #17, GER #38, JPN #12, SWE #23, US #48. UK: Gold (Original Edition); UK: Silver (Deluxe Edition); AUS & JPN: Gold.
Band leader Ritchie Blackmore retained only singer Ronnie James Dio from the previous album line-up, and recruited drummer Cozy Powell, bassist Jimmy Bain and keyboard player Tony Carey to complete the new roster. Recorded in Munich in less than a month, the album was overseen by rock producer and engineer Martin Birch. The band was originally billed as Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow in the US, but was titled simply Rainbow on this release. In 1996 Cozy Powell told Record Collector magazine that much of the album was recorded in one or two takes, with some subsequent overdubs, which explains why no alternate or demo versions exist, just the original or rough mixes.
The album showpiece, the eight-minute-and-26-second track "Stargazer", features the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, and originally had a keyboard intro as evidenced on the 2011 Deluxe Edition's "Rough Mix" version.
Few of the album tracks made it into the band's live set: "Stargazer" and "Do You Close Your Eyes", written prior to the inaugural US tour in late 1975, featured in all the 1975 and 1976 shows, while "A Light in the Black" was dropped early in the 1976 tour, although it was reintroduced into the set during the Japanese dates. "Starstruck" was played in shortened form, usually as part of "Man on the Silver Mountain".
(en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rising_(Rainbow_album))
Outside of the Re-Mastered LA-Mix version of this Album, and the Munich 77 concert, I know of few CDs/-recordings where the audio is so brilliantly great. The best thing about the Deluxe versions of these albums, is that it is the next best thing to getting the Japanese pressings. The German discs that I have bought so far have packaging made in other parts of the EU, but the discs are the key usually. The presentation has great packaging, pictures, and a superb booklet.
The New York Mix is not the greatest all-round mix, but if you want a mix that centres on the guitar on vocals, then the NY mix works. The best all round mix is the LA mix since it has the NY sound with the
depth of the Bass into the mix. The Rough mix on disc two comes very close to being as good as the LA mix, but
fails on some level. All in all these RAINBOW
discs are great.
The LA Mix makes a great Car CD for those who need that in their travels. Just a minor note; The sounds you can hear developing in RAINBOW were starting to come around in the latter part of DEEP PURPLE, and as the Booklet notes, Blackmore learning the Cello helped him expand his composing skills and find a sound for some of his tonal variations that were changing. Ever the temperamental artist, it was probably almost inevitable that Blackmore wind up playing in his current band, BLACKMORES NIGHT which has some skillful guitar work as well as brilliant ideas.

Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin) - Hip Young Guitar Slinger [2CD] (2000)

Year: 4 September 2000 ('60s) (CD 2007)
Label: Castle Music (Europe), CNQDD 1532
Style: Rock, Pop, Rock & Roll
Country: Heston, Middlesex, England (9 January 1944)
Time: 76:00, 77:06
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 273, 261 Mb

Hip Young Guitar Slinger is a compilation album of Jimmy Page's pre-Led Zeppelin studio sessions, recorded between 1962 and 1966. It was released on 4 September 2000.
It is not certain whether Page actually played on every track. For instance, the history section of the Lancastrians' official website specifically states that he did not play on "We'll Sing in the Sunshine" – although he did play on the B-side, "Was She Tall".
Likewise, officially Page has been credited with playing acoustic twelve string guitar on two tracks on The Kinks' debut album, specifically on "I'm a Lover Not a Fighter" and "I've Been Driving On Bald Mountain", and possibly on the B-side "I Gotta Move", but not on "Bald Headed Woman" or "Revenge". Page appeared on the album Kinky Music by the "Larry Page Orchestra" on which the track "Revenge" was covered Larry Page, being the Kinks' then manager and co-writer of "Revenge".
Many tracks of this collection (on disc 2) are from the 1968/69 Blues Anytime series.

Leslie West's epiphany came the night when Cream played the Fillmore East. “We took some LSD," he says, "and the curtain opened and Eric was wearing all his buckskin: they looked great, man. They opened with Sunshine Of Your Love and I looked at my brother and said, ‘My God, we really need to practise.’ I was stunned by how great they sounded, man. The show didn’t end till 4am. It made me a lifelong Cream fan. I was like a groupie for Cream.”
Small world. West’s first band was The Vagrants, an R&B footnote that brought him into the orbit of Felix Pappalardi, producer of Eric Clapton and co’s 1967 masterpiece Disraeli Gears. “Could The Vagrants have been stars?” he wonders. “No. We had a great show, strobe lights, all that stuff. But we were a local group, and we just couldn’t record. Felix came in and tried to record us. He did two singles with us that didn’t really do anything.”
Pappalardi entered the frame again in the late 60s. “Somehow, I got in touch with him. I’d started this group Mountain. Went in the studio. Felix had two weeks before he had to go and produce Cream’s Goodbye, or maybe Jack Bruce’s Songs For A Tailor. But we didn’t have any original songs. I said, ‘Y’know, if we can’t do this album, I guess we may break up.’ And Felix said, ‘That might not be the worst thing in the world. If you put something together, give me a call.’ Well, I called him in three days, came back, went in the studio, and we did my first album, Mountain [1969].”
With Pappalardi joining as bassist and co-writer, Mountain planted their flag deep in the 70s blues-rock scene with classics such as Mississippi Queen and Nantucket Sleighride. A rueful West can only speculate how high they might have flown had Pappalardi’s wife not disrupted the partnership (and shot her husband dead in 1983).
“She stuck her two cents in, got in the middle of Felix and I, caused a lot of crap,” he recalls. “All of a sudden, we were going to shows in separate cars. Drugs entered into it. I guess we got as much good out of it as we could. I love the Nantucket Sleighride album [1971], but after that, we started to go downhill.”

Boston - Greatest Hits (1997)

Year: June 3, 1997 (CD June 3, 1997)
Label: Epic Records (US), EK 67622
Style: Pop, Arena Rock
Country: Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.
Time: 75:29
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 525 Mb

Charts: US #47, CAN #61. US: 2x Platinum; UK: Silver.
Greatest Hits is the only compilation album by American rock band Boston. Released on June 3, 1997, the album features songs originally released on both the Epic and MCA record labels, as well as three previously unreleased recordings ("Tell Me", "Higher Power" and "The Star-Spangled Banner"). Tom Scholz, the band's leader, felt that the album's audio quality was not up to his standards, so a remastered version of the album was released in 2009 with a slightly different track listing. Boston embarked on a tour for this album both times it was released.
The album was certified double platinum by the RIAA on December 4, 2003, and it has sold 2,234,000 copies in the United States as of August 2014.
The cover features the guitar-shaped spaceship flying low over a planet with turquoise rocks and a turquoise tower in the distance. The backside shows a personification of New York City. It is unknown why the band chose New York City instead of Boston, the city the band is named after and which they usually show on their artwork.

Various Artists - Grease [Original Motion Picture Soundtrack] (1978)

Year: April 14, 1978 (CD 1991)
Label: Polydor Records (Europe), 817 988-2
Style: Pop, Soundtrack
Country: U.S.
Time: 63:37
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 361 Mb

Grease was a huge success as a Broadway musical prior to hitting the big screen in 1978. That was the version that transformed Grease into a phenomenon -- it was a runaway box office success, and then became a TV, cable, and video favorite. The soundtrack rivaled its film counterpart as a pop culture perennial, and it's not hard to see why -- its good-natured pastiche of doo wop and early rock & roll is infectious and charming, due in no small part to John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John's charismatic, engaging performances. They sing the majority of the originals -- "Summer Nights," "Hopelessly Devoted to You," "You're the One That I Want," "Sandy," "Greased Lightnin'" -- which were the reason why the film and soundtrack became blockbusters. The fact that the originals hold up better than the '50s tunes is largely due to Sha Na Na's workmanlike performances, but the originals are so giddily enjoyable -- not only the quintet mentioned above, but also Frankie Avalon's "Beauty School Dropout," Stockard Channing's "Look at Me, I'm Sandra Dee," and Frankie Valli's title track -- that everything works. Some listeners may prefer the Broadway cast recording, but the fact of the matter is, the sleek pop production the movie's soundtrack boasts and the cast's enthusiastic performances go a long way in making this Grease the definitive Grease.

Genesis - Live - The Way We Walk - Volume One - The Shorts [Live] (1992)

Year: 1992 (CD 1992)
Label: Virgin Records (Europe), GEN CD 4
Style: Pop, Rock
Country: Godalming, Surrey, England
Time: 63:06, 70:25
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 433, 524 Mb

Instead of releasing the live document of the We Can't Dance tour as a double CD, Genesis, or some clever record executive, decided to split the material into two separate releases. The first would focus on the group's pop singles, while the second would contain their longer, more progressive work. Done this way, it's difficult to get a sense of the concert's momentum: Even the songs on each disc are shuffled from their original live order. For what it's worth, Volume One: The Shorts contains almost all the Genesis singles from 1983-1992. The band rarely stray from the studio versions of their material, and with the audience barely audible and a greatest hits collection released in 1999, the record is superfluous for all but the most die-hard fans.

Mireille Mathieu - Merci Mireille [Vinyl Rip] (1970)

Year: 1970 (LP 1970)
Label: Ariola Records (Germany), 80 830 IT
Style: Pop, Oldies
Country: Avignon, France (22 July 1946)
Time: 36:50
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 268 Mb

French chanteuse Mireille Mathieu is classically known for her illustrious French crooning during the '60s and '70s. Born into a stone labor family of 14 children, Mathieu arrived July 22, 1946, in Avignon, France, and as a child she saved her money from working in the factory so she could pay for singing lessons. In the early '60s, French pop vocalist Johnny Hallyday's manager Johnny Stark noticed Mathieu's enchanting vocalic beauty and later built her into her own star with the classic urchin hairdo and loud, vibrant costumes. She was quickly hailed as the next Edith Piaf and her 1965 performance run at the Paris Olympia sparked her recording relationship with Barclay Records. Singles such as "Mon Credo," "C'est Ton Nom," and "Qu'elle Est Belle" made Mathieu an international star in Europe while achieving mild success in the Americas, but her cover of Englebert Humperdinck's "The Last Waltz" was an impressive French interpretation that made her impact charts in Britain. Humperdinck returned the favor by choosing to sing Mathieu's "Les Bicyclettes de Belsize."
