Pity about the sound quality but there is no doubt that this, even taking into account the Denver concert with Cobham, Clempson and Sanctious, is the best performance we have from Bruce as singer and bass player after Cream. The concert was recorded in 1971 although on one of the releases of this it is given as 1977.
The singing is nearly everything one could hope for knowing what he was capable of at his best in Cream. If only he had kept this up what a legacy of fine concerts we would have. Was it alcohol or drugs that deprived us I wonder? Maybe.
In another one of my reviews I said that one of the great musical tragedies of the 20thC was the loss of all the live multi-track recordings of the US Cream concerts. Well almost as great a loss, for whatever reason, is not having more concerts from Jack of this standard. The material was always there at every stage of his career. Every studio album contained good fresh material for whatever line-up he had in his band at the time and of course the resulting concerts that got recorded are always interesting. But they are also a little disappointing because whenever you listen to them you can easily hear how much better they could have been if Jack had been on better form. And this concert gives you the standard to measure by. Jack Bruce was the young Beethoven of rock and he was still the Beethoven of rock at the time of the Rockpalast concert which is captured on DVD - this concert, up to what is intended as the crowd through the 70s, although always whenever the old Cream numbers are done live post-Cream they are not so much disappointing as downright abysmal not only because his guitarists and drummers just don't get it but also because Jack's performances are lacking vocally.
