Rare recordings produced by Howard Rumsey with his incredible Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All Stars and Charles Persip's Jazz Statesmen.
"There was only a short week in which to record, so we made a date for a double session at Liberty's fabulous new studios... Lee Morgan and Frank Rosolino flipped into some original dance steps at the sound of the playbacks. It was a happy date."

Drummer Stan Levey's "other" career began early as he took this and other photographs in 1957 at the Liberty Records studios in Hollywood, CA at which these recordings were made. Conte Candoli and Lee Morgan only play together on two cuts of the 9 tracks that make up this album. The recording features various combos made up of the then Lighthouse All-Stars - Bob Cooper, Conte, Frank Rosolino, Dick Shreve and Stan along with Lee, Benny Golson, Wynton Kelly and Charlie Persip with bassists Red Mitchel and/or Wilfred Middlebrooks depping for Howard Rumsey, who produced the record, on all 9 tracks. I'm guessing that the occasion was prompted by Dizzy's Gillespie's big band being on the Left Coast in February, 1957.
